About This Program

Join the Lake Forest Civic Orchestra for their second concert of the season under the direction of Maestro Nicholas Wallin.

The 2026-2027 subscription season is themed “Inspired Performances” and this concert features music inspired by places. Where will your imagination travel as you listen to this beautiful music?

The concert opens with Adolphus Hailstork’s “An American Port of Call.”  This energetic portrayal of a busy port city opens with bustling, nearly chaotic sounds of the port coming alive with traffic, transitions to a slower section where you might imagine people strolling the harbor and finishes with intense end-of-day activity. The second piece, Argentinian composer Astor Piazzolla’s soulful “Oblivion” features a small string orchestra and solo violin that will leave you wondering “what’s out there?” The final work on the program is Jean Sibelius’ “Symphony Number 2 in D Major.” This piece has become part of the national identity of Finland and the finale in the fourth movement is one of the most climactic in the orchestral repertoire.

The full program, including intermission, runs approximately 90 minutes.

Audience members are invited to join the orchestra for a complimentary reception in the Solarium after the concert.
